Significance and indications of neoadjuvant therapy in gastrointestinal stromal tumor

Abstract:Neoadjuvant therapy is a research focus in gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). But some aspects such as its definition, indications and significance still need to be clarified further. Neoadjuvant therapy is especially for primary, resectable GIST. The indications include as following: tumor difficult to achieve R0 resection in the preoperative estimation; large tumor (diameter>10cm) lead to bleed, rupture and cause iatrogenic intraperitoneal spread easily;tumor located in the special location and surgery is easy to damage the function of important organ; tumor can be removed with high operation risk, high postoperative recurrence rate and high mortality; tumor combined multiple organs resection is needed possibly in order to achieve R0 resection.
