Abstract:Iatrogenic injury to the inferior vena cava(IVC) represents a daunting challenge to even the most skilled and experienced surgeon. The high morbidity and mortality rates related to the injury are largely because of the inaccessibility of the injury portion of the IVC even with extensive exposure techniques. The adequate preoperative preparation and right intraoperative treatment can reduce its incidence. The endovascular techniques can provide micro invasive treatment to help with hemorrhage control in dire circumstances. Further experience with the technique is needed to establish safety and long-term durability, especially as it relates to indication and duration of anticoagulation and graft surveillance.
