Application of embolization technology in vascular trauma
YANG Ning
Abstract:Hemorrhage of vascualr injury remains one of the leading causes of death following trauma. Hemostatic or hemodynamic stabilization and resuscitation are the corner stone of management in the acute setting. Arterial and delayed phase CT is considered the 'gold standard' for diagnosing and positioning vascular injury after trauma. Hemostasis can be achieved by nonoperative management. Endovascular catheter directed embolization augment nonoperative management when patient's clinical status is unstable despite ongoing blood requirements. Distal/superselective embolization and proximal embolization techonologies can be selected clinically depending on different causes of bleeding and organ injury scaling. In majority of cases, embolization is the most effective method to control trauma-related arterial hemorrhage. Interventionalist has to be familiar with the indications, technology and outcomes of the intended interventions.
