Abstract:Objective To investigate the Fetuin-A serum level in the patients with acute cerebral infarction and its relationship with stroke subtypes according to TOAST criteria, infarct size, severity of neurological impairment. Methods Serum concentrations of Fetuin-A were measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay within 72 hours after infarction in 94 patients. The patients were admitted by neurology department of Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University during 2010 to 2011. All the patients were classified according to TOAST criteria. The infarct size, laboratory and clinical variables were recorded. The severity of neurological impairment was assessed by NIHSS. And compared with the control group. The control group was randomly selected from physical examination and from the patients who atherosclerosis was present without stroke history in the same period of our hospital. Results Patients with acute ischemic stroke in comparison to control subjects without acute ischemic stroke had significantly higher Fetuin-A serum levels [(165.19±38.72)μg/mL vs. (130.81±46.52)μg/mL, χ2=5.00, P<0.01)]. The level of Fetuin-A correlated with scores of NIHSS positively (r=0.25, P<0.05). Conclusion The concentration of serum Fetuin-A could be an indicator of condition assessment in the patients with ACI. The higher the level of serum Fetuin-A,the greater the risk of suffering from cereal infarction.
