Abstract:Objective To explore whether a high level of late-life depressive symptom is related to a higher prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis, and to investigate the relationship of depression in late life with white matter hyperintensities(WMH) detected by MRI in patients with cerebral infarction. Methods Totally 189 patients(133 men and 56 women)with cerebral infarction were selected from Nanjing Stroke Registry Program, and 188 inpatients(93 men and 95 women) without history of cerebral infarction served as controls. Two parameters of carotid atherosclerosis, carotid stenosis and intimal-medial thickness(IMT), were assessed using carotid angiography and ultrasonography, respectively. Cerebral MRI was carried out for all subjects to evaluate the WMH. Results Compared with control group, the incidences of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart diseases, depression in late-life, carotid stenosis, and white matter lesion were significantly higher in stroke patients, (P < 0. 05). Depression in late-life was closely correlated with white matter hyperintensities and carotid atherosclerosis ,and this correlation still existed after adjustment for age and cerebrevascular risk factors (P < 0. 05). Conclusion Depression in late-life may be related to haemodynamics disturbance caused by carotid artherosclerosis.
