Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between insulin resistance and body mass index(BMI)in the nondiabetic first-degree relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods According to the results of oral glucose tolerance test(OGTY),25 informed and consenting first-degree relatives were divided into normal glucose tolerance(FNGT)group and impaired glucose tolerance(FIGT)group.Twelve sex-,age-matched healthy subjects without a family history of diabetes were selected as control(NC)group. The euglycemic clamp was performed to obtain glucose infusion rate(GIR)for evaluation of the degrees of insulin resistance. Results The BMI in FIGT group,FNGT group and NC group were 27.28±0.68,25.99±0.98,and 24.12±0.71,respectively,with that in the FIGT group significantly higher than that in the NC group(P<0.01),and slightly higher than that in the FNGT group(P=0.11).GIR,an index of insulin sensitivity, were lower in FIGT group and FNGT group than in FNGT group(5.20±0.38 vs 9.83±0.86,P<0.01;6.38±0.79 vs 9.83±0.86,P<0.01).There was a positive relation between the insulin resistance and BMI(r=0.477,P<0.01).Multiple regression analysis showed that BMI and a family history of diabetes were independent determinants for insulin resistance(r2=0.39,P<0.01;r2=0.21,P<0.01).Conclusion Insulin resistance can appear early in normoglycemia first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetes patients, which is associated with family history.but not with BMI.
