Abstract:Group B streptococcus(GBS)vaginal colo-nization during pregnancy refers to the carrier of GBS bacteria in the reproductive tract of pregnant women without any clinical symptoms. This infection can have a certain impact on the health of mothers and infants. For pregnant women,GBS vaginal colonization can cause diseases under certain conditions, such as As-ymptomatic bacteriuria, cystitis, preterm labor, and even postpartum puerperal infection.During child birth, bacteria can spread to fetuses and newborns through ascending and vertical infections, leading to serious complications including pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis, becoming a common cause of neonatal death in many countries. Many countries, including China, have established strategies for prenatal GBS screening and preventive antibiotic treatment, but there are still certain limitations. The detection of GBS virulence genes and the development of targeted vaccines will be the means to improve maternal and fetal outcomes and achieve best economic and health benefits in the future.
