Abstract:Epilepsy is a disorder of transient brain dysfunction resulting from spontaneous and recurrent abnormal discharges of neurons, exerting a severe influence on the physical and mental health of patients.Currently, the precise etiology of epilepsy remains incompletely defined.Despite the fact that antiepileptic drugs still constitute the primary means of treating epilepsy at present, some patients exhibit resistance to antiepileptic drugs and have difficulty achieving satisfactory therapeutic outcomes.Hence, there is an urgent need to explore new treatment approaches.Animal models play a crucial role in the investigation of the etiology of epilepsy, the development of antiepileptic drugs, and the exploration of surgical treatment strategies. This paper reviews the construction methods, application scopes and limitations of epilepsy animal models, and highlights the latest epilepsy models in dogs and zebrafish.Simultaneously, this paper discusses the application values and limitations of these models in epilepsy-related research, and envisions future research directions and possible breakthrough points, with the aim of providing a reference for further studies of epilepsy.
