Microsurgery for Chiari malformations (report of 113 cases)

Abstract:Objective To summarize the experiences in treating Chiari malformations by microsurgery in order to decrease the complication and improve the outcomes.Methods The clinical data of 113 patients with Chiari malformations,who underwent surgery from May,2005 to August,2016,were analyzed retrospectively.Results The patients were followed up for 6 months.One patient died after operation.The symptoms were improved in 112 patients after operation within 3 months,but there was no further improvement 6 months after operation.The MRI 3 to 6 months after surgery showed that the syringomyelia decreased or disappeared in 82 of 93 cases and did not change in 11 of 93 cases,and thehydrocephalus relieved in 49 of 68 cases and did not change in 19 of 68 cases.Conclusion The understanding of the problems related to the operations of Chiari malformations and mastering their countermeasures may be helpful to grasp of operative indication,decrease in the postoperative complication and improvement of curative outcomes.
