Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of temporal lobectomy on memorial function in the patients with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (ITLE). Methods The clinical data of 17 patients with ITLE undergoing temporal lobectomy from July, 2012 to December, 2013 were analyzed retrospectively. The memory quotient (MQ) was determined by Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) before the surgery and 6 months after the surgery in all the patients. Results The overall MQ value [(104.76±4.96) points] was significantly higher than that [(89.94±4.45) points] before the surgery in the patients with ITLE (P<0.05). The scores of short-term MQ [(54.94±3.18) points] and immediate-MQ [(9.29 ± 1.00) points] were significantly higher 6 months after the surgery than those [they were (46.29 ± 2.43) and (6.12 ± 1.37) points respectively] before the surgery in the patients (P<0.05). The score of long-term MQ [(40.53 ± 1.70) points] was insignificantly higher 6 months after the surgery than that [(37.53±1.95) points] before the surgery in the patients (P>0.05). Conclusion The memorial function may be significantly improved by the temporal lobectomy in the patients with ITLE.
