Serum Gastrin Level in Patients with Severe Craniocerebral Injury and its Clinical Implication
Abstract:Objective To evaluate the relationship between the variations ofgastrin levels and the stress ulcer in the patients with severe head injury. Methods Seurm gastrin levels were serially determined by radiommunoassay in the 21 patients following severe head injury. Among them,12 cases developed stress ulcers in the course of treatment. Nine healthy subjects were severed as control. Results On the first day after head injury, the mean level of serum gastrin was[(176.91±38.53) pg/ml] and significantly higher than that[(70.96±11.73) pg/ml] in the control group (p<0.01). In the stress ulcer group, the initial gastrin level increased markedly, but it dropped quickly in the 1st, the 3rd and the 7th day after the alimentary bleeding. Conclusion, Gastrin might play an important part in the formation and progress of the stress ulcer in patients with severe head injury.
