The effect of forming atmosphere on the biotribological properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene
Abstract:The mechanical property and biotribological behavior of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were studied as a function of forming atmosphere. UHMWPE specimens were prepared by hot pressing method in conventional environment and 10 aPa low-vacu- um environment, respectively. The fracture morphology, density, ball indentation hardness, small punch test, scratch and wear behavior of UHMWPE specimen were evaluated. The re- suits show that the conventional atmosphere molding method will lead to the formation of re- sidual internal porosity defects inside UHMWPE, while low-vacuum environment molding method can effectively eliminate the internal porosity defects inside UHMWPE, and increase its density, hardness, shear strength and scratch resistance. The experimental results of recip- rocating-wear under the lubrication of bovine calf serum indicate that the wear resistance of molded UHMWPE specimen under low-vacuum environment was increased by 18.9~/6o than that under conventional atmosphere.
