The reduction in sulfate corrosion of concrete by chloride ion
Abstract:Concrete was soaked in sulfate solutions with various chloride concentrations to examine accelerated corrosion. A ten percent sulfate solution was used with the different chloride ion concentrations. Water was used as the control. Compression strengths were measured on the differently treated samples and the corrosion thickness and strength loss were measured. Chloride is seen to decrease the level of sulfate corrosion. Increased chloride concentrations correlate with the decrease in corrosion. Chloride was found to interfere with the reaction between sulfate ions and the concrete hydrate.
