Research on the surface decoration and dispersion of carbon nanotubes
Abstract:Stable homogeneous suspensions were prepared ultrasonically using gum Arabic (GA) as a dispersant. The dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in aque- ous solution was examined. The dispersions were observed using UV-visable spectroscopy and TEM. Concentration measurements show that the optimum concentration of GA is 0.45 g/L. The suspension is rather stable since the concentration of MWCNTs decreases only 11. 450/oo af- ter standing for 80 h. Stabilization of the MWCNTs in aqueous solution by GA is discussed in terms of the adsorption isotherm. The isotherm for GA adsorption onto MWCNTs indicates an "SI." two-step mechanism where the isotherm reaches a saturation plateau at a GA concentra- tion of 0.45 g/L. GA can improve the hydrophilicity and dispersibility of MWCNTs by means of the coating the long molecules.
