Stress analysis of rock surrounding circular openings: The caving problem and logarithmic strain
Abstract:Assuming a long circular opening in a homogeneous, isotropic, elastic rock, we es- tablish the equilibrium differential equation and deformation compatibility condition. The equa- tion relates coordinates after deformation and logarithmic strain. The improved Euler method is used to give numerical solutions of the nonlinear differential equations with boundary conditions appropriate to the caving problem. These solutions are validated by examples. Stress and de- formation of surrounding rock are analyzed with different Youngts modulus. The large deform- ation effect is found to be significant when the relative Youngrs modulus is less than 10. This differs from a finite strain model.
