Optimized cut hole stemming length for shaft excavation using one-step deep-hole blasting
Abstract:Stemming length is an important parameter during shaft excavation by the one-step deep hole blasting method. A study was made to allow intelligent selection of stemming length and to improve the effects from blasting. Rock fragmentation was examined to determine how stemming length affects the blast effect. Also, the relationship between the time when the stemming moves and the rock breaks, the blast crater forms, and adjacent segmented rock be- gins to fragment was analyzed. Then limits for upper, middle, and bottom hole stemming length were deduced using momentum theory. The results were applied to a shaft excavation in the Huafeng coal mine. The one-step deep-hole blasting technique was seen to meet the re- quirements, which proves that this research is applicable to other similar projects.
