Influences of test method for earth pressure coefficient at rest to unloading properties of deep clay
Abstract:Two common laboratory test methods to determine K0 were used to find how K0 is affected by the test method. The deformation and strength during unloading were examined. The stress-strain and tri-axial compression strength of reconstituted deep soils during unloading was tested by the two methods. The deep soils consolidated by the different methods both show brittle fracture during radial unloading. However, the rigid chamber with flexible confinement method gave less obvious results in this regard.Consequently, the ability of the reconstituted deep soil to resist fracture will be improperly estimated. The rigid chamber with servo control system controls the mean radial deformation by forcing distortion at a point to be zero. This is an improvement over the former method and is more appropriate for deep soils.
