Temperature distribution in smoldering polyurethane foam as a function of heat exchange rate
Abstract:A small scale experimental apparatus was used to investigate the temperature distribution in smoldering polyurethane foam. The transition from smoldering to flame was investigated by changing material length or thickness,or changing the rate of heat loss to the environment. The temperature in the smoldering areas was observed to be strongly dependent on heat exchange.Increased lengths or thicknesses of the foam caused the temperature to rise more quickly so that it became easy to reach the temperature where gas-phase oxidation occurs. At this point there is a transition from smoldering to flaming combustion. The foams used had latent heats of 2001.37,1010.8,108.28,1779.28,898.66,95.87,1601.62,809.16,or 87.15 kJ.
