Abstract:Frozen sand was subjected to triaxial loading and unloading in the presence of four temperature gradients. The sand had undergone K0 consolidation before being frozen. The effect of the gradient on stress and strain was investigated. The initial tangential Poisson's ratio increases and the maximum volume contraction of the frozen sand is reduced due to the gradient.Volume strain during loading and unloading is presented as a function of temperature gradient in the sand. The rate and magnitude of contraction vary depending upon thermal gradient and stress path.As temperature increases the volume exhibits continuous expansion.Unloading reduces volume contraction but increases the variation in radial deformation. This verifies that loading strength is greater than unloading strength.
