Abstract:A φ75 mm Hopkinson split pressure bar was used to test a series of concrete speci-mens of different strengths and lengths. The effect of specimen length was investigated. The resuIts show that specimens shorter than 25 mm give results where friction effects have a sig-nificant effect.Specimens longer than 90 mm are clearly Subject to reflex bending and do not reflect the true dynamic mechanical properties of the material.Over the range from 30 to 75mm(an aspect ratio,L/D,of 0.4 to 1.0)specimen length is not a factor and the results accu-rately reflect the dynamic mechanical properties of the specimen.
