Abstract:Laboratory experiments,in-situ field measurements and simulations were used to study how mining velocity affects the distribution of stress and failure zones in surrounding rock and the permeability of the coal. Results show the ductility of the coal decreases while its strength and friability increase as the mining velocity increases. At the same time the loading of the surrounding rock is improved and the horizontal and vertical stresses increase. The distance between the face and the location of the peak abutment pressure also decreases. The gradient in gas pressure increases but the permeability of the coal and rock mass decreases.Excessive min-ing velocity is contrary to the prevention and control of dynamic disasters. An appropriate ve-locity in seams susceptible to outburst is ten meters a day. However, the velocity should be less than seven meters per day in threatened or dangerous zones.
