Abstract:The ζ potentials and contact angels of montmorillonite, kaolinite and coal particles were measured, respectively. The interaction energy between fine particles in coal slurry con-taining kaolinite and montmorillnite particles was calculated using an extended Derjaguin-Lan-dau-Verwey-Overbeek(DLVO)theory.The coagulation mechanisms were analyzed based on settling experiments of coal-clay suspensions. The results indicate that the total potential ener-gy values between coal particles and coal particle and kaolinite particle were negative which caused particle coagulating. The coagulation did not occur because the total potential energy value between kaolinite particles is positive. In coal-montmorillonite suspension, the total po-tential energy values between montmorillonite particles and montmorillonite and coal particle are positive.A flocculent structure was formed in the coal-montmorillonite suspensions in which coal particles are captured and thus both coal and montmorillonite particles settle down completely.
