Abstract:The theory of confined blasting was used to analyze the factors influencing how de-stress blasting in a soft-rock tunnel can relieve pressure in the rock.A test system to determine the pressure relief from blasting was designed.Blasting hardens soft rock by forming a blast cavity and fracture zone. This creates a de-stressed area and transfers geo-stresses into the sur-rounding rock some distance,R,from the wall of the roadway. The pressure relief mav be im-proved by appropriately enlarging the borehole diameter, changing the charge density, using explosives with high detonation velocity, spacing the boreholes so L is greater than,or equal to,2R and by reducing the borehole depth as far as is possible.
