Abstract:An improved mechanical model that considers the effects of joints on internal forces and displacements acting on tunnel shield segments rings was proposed. The segmental lining suffers the action of hydrostatic pressure, horizontal and vertical soil resistance, ground pres-sures and dead loading. The 'force method' is used to obtain an analytical solution to the inter-nal forces and displacements of the lining under these loads. The influence of joint stiffness, location and number on the internal forces is investigated using the number 10 Beijing Metro tunnel as an example. The results show that joint stiffness affects the moment and axial forces acting on the segment ring. The number and distribution of joints play a small role in terms of segment ring forces. Results from the improved model are compared to those from Lee: The main difference is that the trend in the moment has the opposite sign over the range 160°≤φ≤ 180°. Flexural moments calculated by the new model show a downwards trend, while the Lee model shows the contrary. The results of the improved model show better consistence with the reality.
