Abstract:The structural behavior of a prestressed suspension bridge (PSB) is calculated using differential equations and the variational principle. The large-displacement, incomplete general-ized potential energy of the structure was calculated. The equilibrium differential equation from classical deflection theory was derived by introducing some assumptions. A discussion of the e-quations is presented. The static properties of a PSB were investigated, and a comparison to a suspension bridge is presented. The numerical analysis of an example bridge is used to illus-trate the advantages of a PSB. The results show that it increased structural stiffness and de-creased bending moment of the stiffening girder by the existing wind-resistant cables and the pretension force between the cables.
