Abstract:The mechanism by which frictional sparks are formed along the outer part of anchor ropes was investigated by analyzing the loads on the rope. The anchor rope suffers impact at coal face corners during use in underground roadways. A device was designed to test the failure of the rope under impact loading and to analyze the possibility of spark formation. The results show that intact rope can not be pulled apart from its anchor at tensions of 80 kN during im-pact. If the tenside load is below 50 kN, an individual steel stand or a whele rope may be pulled out from the anchor. The occurrence of sparks required these conditions be present:1) Tensile impact loading on the rope;2) Uneven stresses on the steel strands, or irregular arrangement of the jaws holding the rope.
