Effect of Electromyography Biofeedback Therapy on Walking Ability of Stroke Patients with Hemiplegia
Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of surface electromyography biofeedback combined with the routine comprehensive rehabili-tation treatment on walking ability of stroke patients with hemiplegia. Methods 80 stroke patients with hemiplegia were randomly divided into control group (n=40) and treatment group (n=40). All the patients received routine comprehensive rehabilitation treatment. The treat-ment group received electromyography biofeedback electrostimulation in addition. Fugl-Meyer Assessment was used to assess motor and balance function;active range of movement of ankle joint, the integrated electromyogram (iEMG) of isometric contraction of anterior tibia-lis muscle under maximum ankle dorsiflexion and Holden walking function were determined before and 8 weeks after treatment. Results 8 weeks after treatment, the scores of motor and balance function, the active range of movement of ankle, the iEMG, and Holden walking function significantly improved in both groups (P<0.001), and improved more in the treatment group than in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion The electromyography biofeedback combined with routine comprehensive rehabilitation treatment can improve ankle motion control ability and walking ability of stroke patients with hemiplegia.
