Abstract:The diaphragm is a major muscle of respiration and holds a crucial role in the mechanism of spontaneous respiration.Critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU)often experience diaphragmatic dysfunction(DD)due to their underlying medical conditions and various therapeutic interventions, which may influence the effectiveness of treatment and overall clinical results. The mechanisms responsible for the development of DD are not fully elucidated, and there is a lack of consensus on diagnostic criteria, especially in the context of ultrasound-based assessment. This article seeks to provide a comprehensive review of the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of DD in order to develop individualized approaches for the prevention and management of critically ill patients.
