Abstract:Ferroptosis is a regulatory mode of iron-dependent cell death caused by lipid peroxidation and has pathophysiological roles in the development of critical illness, including ischemia/reperfusion injury(IRI),sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS)and other diseases. So far, numerous lines of evidence point to ferroptosis as a major cause of the development and progression of a variety of diseases,it could be a potential target for clinical translational therapy. This article summarizes the occurrence and regulatory mechanism of ferroptosis, and focuses on the direct and indirect effects of ferroptosis activation and(or)inhibition in IRI,and also discusses the possible therapeutic targets of ferroptosis in IRI in order to provide a new perspective for the application of ferroptosis in clinical therapy.
