Abstract:Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. As research has progressed, the understanding of sepsis has evolved from a mere inflammatory response to encompassing immune suppression and dysregulation. This review summarizes the biological mechanisms and clinical implications of immune suppression in sepsis, and evaluates various potential therapeutic strategies targeting this condition, including immune checkpoint inhibitors, immunostimulatory cytokines, immunoglobulins, thymosin alpha-1,and mesenchymal stem cells. The aim is to provide clinicians and researchers with up-to-date insights into immune suppression in sepsis and to explore emerging treatment methods to improve long-term outcomes of the patients.
