Abstract:The shock index (SI),defined as heart rate/ systolic blood pressure, is widely used nowadays to indicate the level of shock in the clinical practice. In addition of being a simple method, the SI, proven by ample recent clinical studies, greatly excels other traditional vital signs while being used only to predict courses of diseases, and therefore becomes a common index of prognosis and diagnosis in the emergency medicine. We hereby reviewed the most recent applications of the SI and its derivatives, especially in assessments of the acute trauma, myocardial infarction (MI),postpartum hemorrhage, sepsis and pulmonary embolism,as well as their instructive functions in the massive blood transfusion and infusion/rehydration.
