Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of progressive resistance exercises on bone metabolic markers and pain relief in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis ( PMO ). Methods Thirty patients with PMO were randomly divided into two groups: progressive resistance exercise group ( n = 15 ) and control group ( n = 15 ). Both groups were given routine drug therapy ( calciumcarbonate D3 + calcitriol + alendronate ). Meanwhile, the progressive resistance exercise group also did progressive resistance exercises. Three months later, bone mineral density, bone metabolic marker, pain relief were observed. Results ( 1 ) There were no differences in bone metabolic marker, bone mineral density and pain relief between the two groups pre-treatment. ( 2 ) Three months after the treatment, the bone mineral density increased in both groups and the progressive resistance exercise group had higher bone mineral density than that in the control group ( P < 0.05 ). ( 3 ) Three months after the treatment, the bone metabolic markers presented decreased trend as compared with the baseline ( P < 0.05 ). Moreover, the level of bone resorption markers in the progressive resistance exercise group was lower than that in the control group ( P < 0.05 ). ( 4 ) Three months after the treatment, both groups showed decreased pain score, which was lower in the exercise group ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusions Progressive resistance exercise could alleviate the bone resorption, increase bone mineral density, and relieve the pain in the patients with PMO.
