Abstract:Objective To analyze the in vivo three-dimensional kinematics of the radiocarpal joint and to explore the characteristics and regularity of the radiocarpal joint in different movement patterns. Methods We studied the in vivo three-dimensional kinematics of the radiocarpal joint with a markerless bone registration technique. Magnetic resonance images of twelve healthy volunteers’ wrist were acquired during motion patterns of dart throwing motion ( DTM ), extension-lfexion motion ( EFM ), and radioulnar deviation ( RUD ). A total of iffteen wrist positions were performed on each volunteer. Image data were input to the software of carpal kinematics measurement platform. The motions of the scaphoid, lunate and triquetrum relative to radius in cross-sectional, sagittal and coronal planes were analyzed. Results In DTM pattern, during the wrist rotated from radial extension to ulnar lfexion, the motions of the scaphoid, lunate, and triquetrum relative to radius were supination 11°, 11°, 19°, lfexion 21°,-2°, 6°, and radial deviation 3°, 3°, 11°. In EFM, during the wrist rotated from extension to lfexion, the motions of the scaphoid, lunate, and triquetrum relative toradius were supination 9°, 7°, 9°, lfexion 44°,-4°, 11°, radial deviation 7°, 22°, 25°. In RUD, during the wrist rotated from radial deviation to ulnar deviation, the motions of the scaphoid, lunate, and triquetrum relative toradius were supination 8°, 15°, 20°, lfexion-9°, 6°, 2°, ulnar deviation 8°, 14°, 6° respectively. Conclusions Radiocarpal joint motion is a three-dimensional composite movement, which indicates that the range of motion in sagittal plane is the most signiifcant. The scaphoid motion in the sagittal plane is greater than the lunate and triquetrum. Adaptive motion exists between the proximal carpal row.
