Abstract:Objective To evaluate the axial vertebral rotation for their relations with the coronal and sagittal spine as well as pelvic deformity by EOS imaging system. Methods From September 2015 to February 2016, 49 patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis subjected to EOS X-ray examinations were enrolled in this study, followed by sterEOS 3 D reconstructions. According to the location of the major curve, coronal Cobb’s angle, axial rotation parameters including apical vertebral rotation, superior end vertebral rotation, inferior end vertebral rotation, superior end interverbral rotation, inferior end interverbral rotation, sagittal T4-12 kyphosis and pelvic parameters involving pelvic incidence and sagittal pelvic tilt were taken. Relations between different axial rotation parameters and Cobb’s angle or pelvic parameters were evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. The correlation was investigated between apical vertebral rotation of major thoracic, thoracolumbar and lumbar curve, and sagittal thoracic kyphosis, respectively. Results Strong and signiifcant correlations were observed between apical vertebral rotation and Cobb’s angle (r = 0.792,P < 0.001 ). Slight and moderate correlations existed between axial rotation including superior end vertebral rotation, inferior end vertebral rotation, superior end interverbral rotation, inferior end interverbral rotation and Cobb’s angle, respectively (r = 0.419,P= 0.003;r = 0.320,P= 0.025;r = 0.366,P< 0.01;r = 0.345,P= 0.015 ). Except for the slight correlation between apical vertebral rotation and pelvic tilt (r = 0.330,P< 0.021), no signiifcant correlations were found between axial vertebral rotation and pelvic parameters. There were also no significant correlations between apical vertebral rotation of different major curves and T4-12 kyphosis. Conclusions Axial vertebral rotation is closely related to the spinal coronal Cobb’s angle. However, relations are failed to be found between the axial vertebral rotation and thoracic kyphosis or pelvic deformity.
