Abstract:Objective To investigate complications associated with surgical dislocation of the hip and explore the security of this procedure. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 90 patients ( 95 hips ) who were treated with surgical approach, recorded the incidence of complications such as avascular necrosis of the femoral head, trochanteric nonunion, heterotopic ossification, infection, thromboembolic disease and nerve injury and compared the influence of clinical factors to the incidence of the complications. Results A total of 71 patients ( 71 hips ) were followed up for 6 - 30 months with the averages of 13 months. The complications included 2 hips ( 2.8% ) of trochanteric delayed union, 6 hips ( 8.4% ) of heterotopic ossification, and 1 hip ( 1.4% ) of infection. No avascular necrosis of the femoral head, trochanteric nonunion, thromboembolic disease and nerve injury occurred in this study. Gender, age, diagnosis, surgery time, surgical approach, labrum management, the choice of internal fixation had no impact on the incidence of complications. Conclusions Surgical dislocation of the hip is a safe and effective procedure with a low complication rate. With a whole vision of the acetabulum and femoral head, this procedure can preserve the blood supply and prevent avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
