Abstract:Objective To evaluate the therapeutic results for humeral simple bone cyst with elastic stable intramedullary nail and to analyze the prognostic factors of the treatment. Methods Twenty-nine patients with humeral simple bone cyst were treated by elastic stable intramedullary nail from January 2009 to December 2012. In 29 patients, there were 21 males and 8 females. Fifteen cases were in the left and 14 cases in the right. Twenty-three patients were accompanied by pathological fractures. The average age of treatment was 8.7 years. All patients had X-ray, CT and MRI before operation. If the pathology of the bone tumor was proved to be unicameral bone cyst by open operation, the elastic stable intramedullary nail was used. The Capanna standard was used to evaluate the bone cyst. Interclass differences were analyzed by χ2 test. Results Among 29 patients, 26 patients were followed up for the average of 34 months. According to Capanna standard, 7 cases were healed, 10 were healed with residual lesions, 6 were of recurrence, and 3 had no responses. The effective rate was 65.4% ( 17 patients ), which showed no statistical differences compared with curettage with bone graft, percutaneous methylprednisolone injection and autologous marrow grafting. No significant differences existed comparing with Roposch’s results ( P<0.05 ).Conclusions Therapy for humeral simple bone cyst with elastic stable intramedullary nail is safe and convenient. However, the short-term effects are not superior than other treatment methods. No obvious factors affecting the treatment results of the humerus bone cyst are found.
