Abstract:Objective To evaluate the curative results of arthroscopic treatment for horizontal tears in the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus through an assistant medial approach. Methods From January 2011 to December 2012, 23 patients with horizontal tears in the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus underwent arthroscopic treatment using an assistant medial approach. Anterolateral, anteromedial and assistant medial appraoches were employed in the patients. An arthroscope was placed via the anteromedial approach. The superior leaf of the anterior horn was averted by a probe through the anterolateral approach, and the inferior leaf of the anterior horn was excised with a punch through the assistant medial approach. Results All the 15 patients were followed up for a mean period of 16.6 months ( range: 10-26 months ). Twelve patients had knee joint pain before the operation, which disappeared completely. The other 3 patients occasionally had knee joint pain after doing sports. The range of motion ( ROM ) of the knee joints recovered to a normal level after the operation, and the Lysholm scores were increased from ( 70.1±8.3 ) points preoperatively to ( 92.7±4.8 ) points postoperatively ( pairedt test,t=7.45,P=0.05 ).Conclusions Assistant medial approach provides a safe and effective alternative for arthroscopic treatment for horizontal tears in the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus.
