Abstract:Objective To explore the effects of rehabilitation therapy on functional recovery in the patients with cervical spinal cord injury ( CSCI ).Methods From December 2011 to March 2013, 32 patients with CSCI received rehabilitation training, including 27 males and 5 females. Their average age was ( 47.25±7.1 ) years old and their average time staying in hospital was 108 days ( range: 24-193 days ). Exercise therapy combined with physical therapy and Chinese medicine massage therapy was performed. The functional recovery was assessed by the American Spinal Injury Association ( ASIA ) standards, Barthel index and functional independence measurement ( FIM ).Results The complications in the patients with CSCI were effectively controlled after the rehabilitation therapy. According to the ASIA standards, the function was signiifcantly improved after the treatment when compared with that before the treatment. The Barthel index score was ( 17.5±5.03 ) points before the treatment, which was obviously increased to ( 22.81±6.8 ) points after the treatment (P<0.05 ). The FIM score was ( 53.76±3.71 ) points before the treatment, which was obviously increased to ( 63.78±7.25 ) points after the treatment (P<0.05 ).Conclusions The motor function and ability of daily life ( ADL ) in the patients with CSCI are signiifcantly improved after the rehabilitation therapy, which helps them return to family and society quickly.
