Abstract:Occurrence and development of degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS) is related closely to the changes of biomechanical properties of lumbar vertebrae. Different degrees of degeneration in intervertebral discs, facet joints and lumbar muscle groups are likely to cause lumbar scoliosis due to the imbalanced forces to lumbar segments, furthermore, to increase the lumbar loading, and change the stress direction. The above actions form an aggravating illness due to a vicious spiral. In this paper, the relationships among DLS and the changes of biomechanical properties of entire lumbar vertebrae, lumbar intervertebral discs, facet joints, and lumbar muscles groups were reviewed, providing a theoretical basis for DLS clinical treatment.
