Current application of posterior osteotomy in severe spinal deformity

Abstract:Following the development of 3D deformity correction theory and spinal internal fixation systems, posterior osteotomy for the patients with severe spinal deformity has been extended for clinical application. The technique has the advantage of excellent effect in spine correction and spinal cord decompression while the disadvantages include absence of standardized and individualized treatment strategies, high incidence of postoperative complications and so on. Latest development was reviewed in this paper involving preoperative examinations and evaluations, different surgical methods and their indications as well as orthopedic effects, surgical complications and the relative preventions etc.
