Abstract: Porous tantalum, with high porosity, low elastic modulus, high friction coefficient, and combined with tissue ingrowth characteristic and chondroconductive potential, is considered as a perfect implant material in orthopaedic surgery. Recently, there are exciting outcomes reported in researches of manufacture technique and diversified implant devices of porous tantalum. Therefore, in this paper, the manufacture technique, biological characteristics of porous tantalum as biomaterials, and the clinical application of its implant devices in orthopaedic surgery are summarized.
