Abstract:Objective To gain a preliminary understanding of the levels of rare earth elements(REEs)in marine organisms near Shandong Province, analyze their distribution and pollution degree, and clarify the health and safety risks caused by REEs.Methods A total of 338 samples were purchased from seafood markets and other places, detected and analysed for REEs content using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer(ICP-MS),and the results were used to evaluate the health risks for the residents of Shandong Province according to the health risk analysis method suggested by the US Environmental Protection Agency(USEPA).Results The content of REEs in marine organisms in the sea areas near Shandong Province was in the order of shellfish(121.09 μg/kg),crustaceans(237.94 μg/kg),and fish(790.83 μg/kg)from high to low.The mean contents of Ce(100.27 μg/kg),La(57.55 μg/kg),Pm(43.01μg/kg),Nd(42.73 μg/kg),and Y(35.01 μg/kg)were relatively high, showing enrichment of light rare earths. The average daily intake of REEs by adults and children in Shandong Province through consuming marine organisms was lower than the safety standard of 70.00μg/(kg·d).Conclusion There is some variation in the content of REEs in marine organisms, and the level of intake of REEs in the population poses a negligible and low health risk.
