Risk factors for metabolic syndrome in urban areas of Qingdao in 2013

Abstract:Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and risk factors of metabolic syndrome (MS) in urban residents in Qingdao and provide basis for prevention and control of chronic diseases in Shibei District.Methods A total of 1 200 permanent residents over the aged 18 in urban areas of Qingdao from 2013 were selected for questionnaires, physical examinations and related metabolic indexes test.The influence factors of MS were analyzed by Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis.Results The prevalence of MS was 32.24%.The prevalence of male and female were 39.15% and 25.97%, respectively.The prevalence of males was higher than that of females (P<0.01), and there were significant differences among age groups (P<0.01), the highest prevalence rate was in the age group over 50 years old (49.75%).Logistic regression analysis showed that high age (OR=1.05) and smoking (OR=2.65) were risk factors for metabolic syndrome, and high education level (OR=0.61) was a protective factor for metabolic syndrome.Conclusion There is a high prevalence of MS in Qingdao.Monitoring of the risk factor and comprehensive measures of intervention should strongly be advocated.It is necessary to strengthen the awareness of chronic disease prevention of residents, promote a healthy lifestyle, and promote national health.
