Investigation on knowledge, attitude and practice of tuberculosis prevention and control among students in a medical college in Shenyang

Abstract：Objective To learn the knowledge, attitude and practice of college students in medical college of Shenyang and provide the basis for tuberculosis prevention and control. Methods By using stratified cluster sampling method, 1350 students in medical college were taken to conduct a questionnaire survey from January to April in 2016. Results Among the students, the total awareness of tuberculosis prevention knowledge was 57. 3％, the total awareness of information on tuberculosis symptom was 83. 7％, while the awareness of information on TB free treatment policy was only 53. 9％. The rate of correct attitude towards the TB patients was only15. 0％, and the rate of initiative to inform others that their TB disease was66. 1％. The male college students had significantly lower scores of awareness of knowledge, attitude and practice in TB prevention than female students ( P ＜ 0. 05) ; the junior college students had significantly lower scores in awareness of knowledge than other students ( P ＜ 0. 01) ; the students with higher family income had higher scores in awareness than others ( P ＜0. 05). Students had gained knowledge through newspaper periodicals ( 58. 1％), network ( 52. 7％) and radio ( 47％).Students who hoped to acquire knowledge through health education and special lectures were 57. 2％ and 41. 6％, respectively. Conclusion Students in medical college had lower awareness of the knowledge, attitude and practice in TB prevention and control. Most students have a positive attitude towards tuberculosis but are not properly treated with tuberculosis. The prevention and treatment of tuberculosis also should be improved. College should conduct lectures and other activities in health education in TB prevention and control.
