Status of health literacy survey of residents in Nanxun district

Abstract:Objective To understand the status of health literacy among residents in Nanxun district of Huzhou, provide scientific basis for the government and relevant departments to formulate health and health promotion policies and to carry out comprehensive intervention measures. Methods A stratified multistage random sampling method was used to collect 801 permanent residents in Nanxun district. SPSS 19 statistical software was used to analyze and sort out the data. Results The health literacy level of residents in Nanxun district was 12. 00%, and the proportion of healthy lifestyle and behavior literacy, basic knowledge and idea and basic skill accomplishment were12. 63%, 17. 13% and 24. 50%, respectively. Six kinds of health problems were: chronic disease prevention literacy acounted for 7. 63%, basic medical literacy acounted for 13. 13%, health information literacy acounted for 15. 13%, infectious disease prevention literacy acounted for 23. 75%, scientific health concept acounted for 32. 50%, safety and first aid literacy accounted for 48. 50% from low to high literacy. The distribution of the health literacy level showed the following characteristics: there were statistically significant differences in the overall level of health literacy in different age, educational level, occupation, urban and rural residents ( P < 0. 05) ; the health literacy level decreased with increasing age and increased with increasing level of education; the health literacy level of the intellectuals ( 61. 97%) was significantly higher than that of health the literacy level of farmers ( 15. 40%) ; literacy level of urban residents ( 48. 25%) was significantly higher than that of rural residents ( 16. 75%) ( P < 0. 01). Conclusion The health literacy level of residents in Nanxun district should be gradually improved, the elderly and low level population are the work focus groups in future health education; rural areas are the focus of future health education work; quality of chronic disease prevention and control should be in the future focus on health education. It should actively carry out the activities of health education and health promotion in the stratified, classified and extensive and individualized health education, and improve the level of health literacy in the whole region.
