The Control Effects of AITC on Postharvest Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables and Safety Evaluation
LIU Shuguang
Abstract:Allyl isothiocyanate(AITC),the main active ingredient of horseradish extract,is a volatile natural compound extracted from cruciferous plants. It can be used to control plant diseases caused by nematodes, fungi, etc.,as well as stored-product pests in agricultural production. This study conducted quantitative in vivo fumigation tests with a fixed liquid volume of AITC to evaluate its efficacy against litchi downy blight(caused by Peronophythora litchii),banana anthracnose(caused by Colletotrichum musae),and citrus blue mold(caused by Penicillium italicum). The results revealed that although AITC exhibited good control efficacy against disease spread on artificially inoculated litchi and banana,it caused obvious phytotoxicity to these fruits even at relatively low concentrations, rendering it unsuitable for postharvest disease control on them. The control efficacy of AITC against P.italicum on mandarin increased with increasing concentration within the tested range, and no phytotoxicity was observed on the fruit. These findings indicatd that low doses of AITC were suitable for controlling postharvest diseases like citrus blue mold on mandarin, offering advantages of simple application(fumigation),safety, and high efficiency.
