Progress of Newborn Screening Program for Congenital Heart Disease(CHD)in Jinshan District of Shanghai with the Investigation of Health Needs of Children Parents

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To describe the progress of the Newborn Screening Program for Congenital Heart Disease(CHD)in Jinshan District of Shanghai from 2019 to 2023,and to investigate the health needs of parents of children with CHD.METHODS Data on neonatal CHD screening,diagnosis,and treatment from 2019 to 2023 were through the Information Management System of Newborn Screening for CHD.A self-designed questionnaire was used to investigate the health needs of all parents of CHD children.RESULTS From 2019 to 2023,a total of 17 891 newborns were screened in Jinshan District,with an average annual screening rate of 99.81%.Of the 17 891 newborns,465(2.60%)newborns were detected with positive screening results,of whom 426(91.61%)underwent echocardiography for CHD diagnosis.The echocardiography examination rate has increased from 4.73%in 2019 to 100%in 2023.A total of 114(24.52%)screen-positive newborns were diagnosed with CHD.Of 17 426 infants with negative screening results of the dual-index method,26 were diagnosed with CHD.Parents of children with CHD mainly acquired knowledge about CHD through the preaching of medical institutions or professional doctors(64.42%),followed by television,TikTok,and WeChat(24.04%).92(88.46%)parents were willing to inform doctors of their child's CHD during medical check-ups at community hospitals.Parents had high health needs for the feeding/nutrition(78.85%)and vaccination(73.08%)of CHD children.CONCLUSION Newborn Screening Program for CHD has been well implemented in Jinshan District of Shanghai.Additionally,community hospitals should focus on the cultivation of health education talents,help parents acquire knowledge related to CHD.
