A Cross-Sectional Survey on Sleep Problems and Influencing Factors Among Preschool Children in Suzhou

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To explore the sleep status and influencing factors for sleep problems in preschool children in Suzhou,to provide evidence-based support for formulating targeted intervention strategies.METHODS From March to June 2024,a cross-sectional survey was conducted in Suzhou by using random cluster sampling method.All preschool children in the selected kindergartens were taken as the survey subjects.Qualified investigators,after training and assessment,guided the guardians to fill out the sleep status questionnaire.Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the factors for sleep problems.RESULTS A total of 13 670 preschool children were included in this survey,with an average CSHQ score of(46.85±6.13).The prevalence of sleep problems was 81.0%.The main sleep problems were sleep delay(64.6%),sleep anxiety(44.4%),and sleep duration(30.6%).The prevalence of sleep problems decreased with age(x2=67.448,P<0.05).Logistic regression analysis revealed that outdoor activity time<2 h/d,regular vitamin D intake,time of screen explore>1 h/d,and only-child were independent influencing factors for sleep problems(P<0.05).Outdoor activity time<2 h/d(OR=1.285,95%CI:1.151~1.435),time of screen explore>1 h/d(OR=1.766,95%CI:1.610~1.939),and only-child(OR=1.645,95%CI:1.404~1.699)were risk factors for sleep problems(P<0.05),while regular vitamin D intake was a protective factor for sleep problems(OR=0.645,95%CI:0.590~0.704,P<0.05).CONCLUSION The prevalence of sleep problems among preschool children in Suzhou is more prominent.The occurrence of sleep problems is related to various factors.Increasing outdoor activity time,reducing screen explore,and regularly taking vitamin D can be beneficial in reducing sleep problems and improving sleep in preschool children.
