Abstract:OBJECTIVE To understand the current status of visual impairment in elderly people aged 60 years and above in Yangpu District of Shanghai.METHODS Based on the 2023 eye health screening program in Yangpu District of Shanghai,a convenience sampling method was used to analyze the status of visual impairment in the elderly aged 60 years and above by examine presenting visual acuity, small hole vision, and non-cycloplegic refraction measurements.RESULTS A total of 9 553 study subjects were included. The detection rates of blindness and moderate-to-severe visual impairment in daily living vision were 0.70%and 7.55%,respectively;the detection rates of binocular blindness and low vision in small hole vision were 0.66%and 3.16%,respectively.The detection rate of blindness and moderate-to-severe visual impairment was higher in females(8.72%)than in males(7.55%),and the difference was statistically significant(x2=4.203,P<0.01);the detection rates of blindness and moderate-to-severe visual impairment in the age groups 60~69 years,70~79 years, and ≥80 years were 6.64%,8.57%,and 17.38%,and the difference was statistically significant(x2=62.359,P<0.01).The proportion of blindness and moderate-to-severe visual impairment increased with age;the detection rate of blindness and moderate to severe visual impairment was higher in diabetic patients(9.62%)than in non-diabetic patients(7.76%),and the difference was statistically significant(x2=8.424,P<0.05).CONCLUSION The detection rate of blindness and moderate-to-severe visual impairment was higher among the elderly in Yangpu District, especially in the elderly, female, and diabetic patients.Knowledge of eye health should be strengthened, and early screening, early detection and early treatment should be carried out to reduce visual impairment.
