Study on Nutrition and Physical Development in 2 796 Children and Adolescents Aged 7~18 in Songjiang District of Shanghai

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To understand the nutritional status and physical development of children and adolescents aged 7~18 in Songjiang District of Shanghai,and to provide scientific reference for better promoting the growth potential and development of children and adolescents and formulate health intervention measures.METHODS A stratified cluster sampling method was employed in 2023.2 796 children and adolescents aged 7~18 in Songjiang District were sampled.The height and weight were measured,and their body mass index(BMI)was calculated to assess malnutrition,overweight,and obesity,as well as height development level.The purpose of this extensive assessment was to evaluate their growth and development.RESULTS The detection rates of wasting,overweight,and obesity in 2 796 children and adolescents were 7.58%,16.60%,and 18.06%,respectively.The detection rate of growth retardation was 1.43%.Boys(7.36%,19.89%,24.54%)were more likely to be emaciated,overweight or obese than girls(7.00%,13.30%,11.59%).Obesity detection rates were highest in the 9~11 age group(24.37%).Obesity detection rates were highest among rural students(7.64%).Children in suburban and rural locations were more likely to be detected as slim than those in metropolitan areas.The proportions of high,medium high,normal,medium low,and low height development levels were 6.37%,24.14%,64.06%,5.22%,and 0.21%,respectively.CONCLUSION The coexistence of malnutrition,overweight,and obesity among children and adolescents in Songjiang Distric.Government agencies need to give this problem top priority,carry out sensible solutions,and promote the healthy development of children and adolescents.
